Design and Build Quality

• The Huawei P20 Lite design is similar to its elder brothers.
• Front and back panels are made entirely of glass which makes it look premium looking handsets, however, it is also fragile.
• Huawei P20 Lite is really compact and light weight. It easily fits into hands and people with small palm can easily reach any corner of the screen.
• The camera placement is horizontal behind the back while the front camera, ambient light sensor and earpiece are placed between the front notch.
• With the performance of very thin bezel and 19: 9 aspect ratio, the company has used almost the entire front panel.

Display, UI and OS

• Huawei P20 Lite display is really bright, sharp and vibrant.
• As it has LTPS IPS LCD panel, it eats less power than regular LCDs.
• The handset has full HD + resolution, so it’s really enjoyable to see photos or watch videos.
• 19:9 aspect ratio assures more content on a single page.
• As the handset has front glass, it does reflect under direct sunlight.
• Talking about UI and OS, the handset has Huawei’s in-house developed EMUI 8.0 UI based on Android 8.0 Oreo.
• The EMUI comes with several features, much like Xiaomi’s MIUI. You can tweak the settings or themes to completely change the look and feel of this device

Gaming and Performance

• Starting with the benchmark score, it is often seen that the kirrin processors are not well optimized and the Huewei P20 Lite is no exception. Each time when I ran the benchmark test on 3D, the result was different than the previous one. The result was consistent on Geekbench where it scored 938 points on single core and 3706 points on multi-core.
• The Huawei P20 Lite is very good at multi-tasking. I didn’t see any lag while switching between heavy or normal apps.
• I played several heavy games on the smartphone including Shadow Fight 3, PUBG Mobile, Asphalt Nitro and FZ9: Timeshift – Legacy of War. I am happy that none of them was lagging.
• I played for 30 minutes and the handset took 14% percent.
• But yes, I wasn’t satisfied with the graphics performance. Graphics rendering is just average and I often saw frame drops, especially in FZ9: Timeshift – Legacy of War and Asphalt Nitro.
• As the handset is made of glass, it starts heating very quickly. The temperature rose several degrees up while 30 minutes of gaming.

• Samples taken from this phone during daylight condition will win your heart. Photos have rich and accurate colors, very good sharpness and details.
• HDR mode is also fine. It effectively works on the dark part of image in order to produce a bright photo with good details capturing from light as well as dark parts.
• Its auto bokeh is more than good. It autofocus is really fast and recognizes edges of the object and keep them sharp while blurring the background.
• The handset comes with dedicated “Wide Aperture” mode allowing you to adjust the blur level even after a photo has been taken, much like Galaxy J7 Duo’s “Live Focus” feature.
• Photos taken in lowlight condition might disappoint you but hey, they are still better than those on Redmi Note 5 or Note 5 Pro.
• Lowlight photos lack details and look dark.
• Turning on HDR mode during lowlight photography will help you. It brings brightness and better details however, the light part gets overexposed.
• And now comes the dedicated “Low Light” mode. In my entire career, I haven’t seen any feature like this. Turning on this feature changes the scenario upside down. It takes 20 seconds to click a photo but when it’s done, you won’t believe that it is taken from this phone. With accurate colors, sharpness and details, it often seems that either the photo has been taken during daylight or from a DSLR.

• The handset is backed by a 3,000 mAh battery that supports fast charging. However, I don’t think it is using latest fast charging tech.
• It took me few minutes over 2 hours to completely charge the battery.
• During normal or average usage, the handset easily lasts a day.
• During moderate usage, I don’t think this would last more than 14-15 hours.
• Heavy usage or constant gaming would require you to charge the device after 5-6 hours.

Our Verdict

With an elegant design and decent specifications, I think the smartphone will do well in the market. Though, I think it is a bit overpriced. Anyway, the smartphone has very good display and decent camera which is better than some of the popular smartphones like Redmi Note 5 Pro. I think that the company could have given a better processor for this price.
